Strand Of Oaks Talk Musical Memories

Timothy Showalter shares the sounds that shaped his new album “Hard Love”

Strand of Oaks, the brainchild of alt-rocking singer songwriter Timothy Showalter has been a project that’s been getting a great deal of praise for its latest album, Hard Love. With roots deep in a tradition of rock at it’s finest this is a project that has spread limbs and reached toward light of contemporary treatments and modern sensibilities. Showalter’s songwriting has accelerated beyond previous projects and this album could very well be the best from the artist so far, and all the more encouraging since it signals a new sense of purpose, a new trajectory that should mean great things in the future.

Currently on tour Strand of Oaks is taking the material from Hard Love to live audiences who are in for a real treat. ARTISTdirect caught up with a very busy Timothy Showalter to ask that he walked us through some of his musical memories, and inform us of the sonic DNA that shaped his new album and his approach to craft. Here’s what he said…

The first live show I attended…

No clue of the first show. But I can guess it was probably at the county fair and if I can guess further I’m putting a lot of money that its was .38 Special or an equivalent band.

First song I learned to play…

“Doll Parts” by Hole

The song that encouraged me to learn my instrument of choice..

Every song with an electric guitar basically. I just loved the instrument looked most of all. Jimi’s Strat looked like a spaceship. I loved the knobs and dials, just everything. Still get excited everytime I see an electric guitar.

The song that reminds me of home…

Caribou – “I can’t do without you” or Cass McComnbs – “You saved my life”. Both make me want to dance with my wife.

My guilty secret track…

I’m not guitly of any music that I love. Feeling guilty about loving something is reserved only for cynical assholes. Embrace what you love and boogie free!

The song I wish I wrote…

Every Pink Floyd Song.

The finest song from my all time hero…

Tie between Nina Simone – “Stars” and Jimi Hendrix “Wind Cries Mary”

The song I’ve written of which I’m most proud…

The next ten songs that I write. I love all the songs but I’m always most excited for those the are to come.

The song that should be played at my funeral…

I don’t want to think about my funeral right now. I hope I just explode into star dust and catch a ride on some solar wind and sail through the stars!!!!!

My favorite track from my most recent project…

“Taking Acid and Talking to My brother”
