Sophia Bastian Shares The Songs That Shaped Her Musical Mind

Sophia Bastian Rhythm of My Heart interview

Sophia Bastian first broke onto the scene back in 2012 with an independent release of her debut, Juvenile Blues EP. From there her cover version of Portishead’s “Glory Box” caught the attention of music fans who, like the critics, responded to the smoldering approach to vocal delivery.

Having supported The Roots on tour, and drawing up plans for her sophomore EP Bastian is already showing signs of becoming the kind of writer that explores the creative process as well as her ability to perform.

With her recent single “Rhythm To My Heart” Bastian has once again added depth and intrigue to her next step. ARTISTdirect thought it was a good time to catch up, sit down, and ask the singer songwriter about her musical memories.  Here’s what she said.

First single I bought …

The Roots feat. Erykah Badu – “You Got Me.” I remember watching the music video with my parents and them really being into it to. So, I felt like I impressed my parents with my taste which was a serious moment.

First live show I attended …

Alicia Keys Radio City Hall. This was when her first hit “Falling” was out. Every girl was there for that song and she slayed it!

First song I learned to play …

Nina Simone – “Sugar in My Bowl.” I figured out the chords on the piano and it’s such always fun to play this song. It’s the attitude 101 of Miss Simone I would say.

The song that encouraged me to learn my instrument of choice …

Stevie Wonder – I had this “Songs in the Key of Life” book and learned the baseline of this song on guitar.

It’s so much fun playing the bass line along to the recording.

The song that reminds me of home …

Bob Marley – “Satisfy My Soul.” Because my Dad listened to the album, “Satisfy My Soul” is on a lot! It gives me this happy feeling of late-bed times on Friday nights with food and music filling the house.

My guilty secret track …

Ooooh, this has been my jam for months now…”Weak” by SWV. I’ve been giving myself endorphins listening to this, walking on streets with it playing. I experience the better part of life in the privacy of my own headphones, I swear.

The song I wish I wrote …

“I Can’t Quit You Baby” by Led Zeppelin. This is my favorite song by Led Zeppelin. It’s so raw and free!

The finest song from my all time hero …

Aretha Franklin – “One Step Ahead.” I can listen to this song every day. several times a day. I wanna say I probably listened to anybody else on the planet. I wonder if my itunes report could attest to that.

The song I’ve written of which I’m most proud …

That’s a really hard question…I’m gonna go with my first single ever “Breaking.” I guess I’m proud for just managing to finish that one because I was that crushed.

The song that should be played at my funeral …

I really really hate thinking about my own funeral. Ok, so if I had to pick a song it would be “Claire De Lune” by Débussy.

Just to make sure everyone will in fact cry. You just have to cry to when you hear this piece of music. It locates your SOUL.

My favorite track from my most recent project …

“Rhythm To My Heart.” I love how the song the developed in the studio. We made a few rhythmic changes and then I had to go back and re-phrase some lyrics. It was a quite a learning experience and I’m so happy now we finished the arrangement and production. I enjoy playing the acoustic arrangement of this song just as much as with the full band.
