Coleman Trapp and Luke Atlas share their favorite tracks for the season
Comprised of Coleman Trapp and Luke Atlas, Coast Modern is preparing to release their debut album July 28th, but have recently shared their newest summer sound, “Dive”. The easy-to-dance to track shines a light on why this duo has been grabbing press and headlines for the past year.
Despite not debuting their live show till this past SXSW, the band has managed to immediately grab the attention of other pop favorites. Earlier this year they toured with BORNS, The Wombats and The Temper Trap, showing that they are more than ready to share the stage with the big names.
ARTISTdirect caught up with Coleman and Luke to find out what has been filling their ears so far this summer. In return, they shared with us a playlist that is full of chill vibes that are bound to lift spirits. From pop and hip hop to rock and electronic, the duo’s playlist is filled with everything you need to beat the heat.
What makes a good summer song? It’s all about oozing melodies, buoyant bass lines, and a BMP perfectly timed to a lazy swing in the hammock. But it’s also about vibes that capture the intangible ache of nostalgia— the evaporated endless summers of youth, the painful crushes, and the longing to be somewhere, anywhere else. You’ll find a little of all that in these songs.
Kicking off the list is our latest track, well-suited to the summer lifestyle, “Dive.” We tried to bottle the feeling of nascent summer romance by the beach, with the chorus encouraging listeners to leap into that new experience.
Continuing the summer stroll we have a string of dreamy indie gems by Toro y Moi, Geowulf, Alvvays, and Beach Fossils. The vibes are thick and the themes are salty and sweet.
A few more steps and we get a little electric with Kendrick Lamar and Calvin Harris competing for song of the summer. LOVE. or Feels? Don’t make me choose. Pop music is riding a cool wave right now. We also get Kali Uchis’ “Ridin Round,” my personal favorite for cruising the highway with all the windows down.
Wistful jams set in with Bad Bad Hats, SOAK, and Beach House. All perfect for chilling out or agonizing about the one that got away.
We close out our journey with some lesser-known throwback gems. The Beach Boys’ “All I Wanna Do” is oddly lo-fi and fits with contemporary chillwave acts from the top of the list. Finally, you can’t have a beachy, summer playlist without a little Brazilian music. “Baby” is so lush you can practically see the palms swaying and hearts swooning. Magic.
