Indie pop chanteuse talks her new EP and growing up where Justin Bieber now resides
Carrie Lane is not afraid to wear her heart on her sleeve, and that is apparent on her debut EP, California Freaks. The four-song collection acts as a diary of sorts for the young singer, as she navigates her way through past and present relationships.
“I wanted to write something that was truly me, not who people want to perceive me to be,” Lane explains. “I wrote this EP from the heart – it’s truly all the sides of me being loved and me as a lover… not every song is pretty and not every lyric is nice, but every note is real and every emotion is me.”
ARTISTdirect caught up with the chanteuse to find out more about the EP and her hometown, which is now home to the one and only Justin Bieber.
Hello – Please introduce yourself.
Hi! My name is Carrie Lane and I’m an indie pop singer in Los Angeles, California
Where are you right now?
At home! More specifically at my kitchen table deciding if I should eat the second poptart in the pouch
Please name your fellow band members and their roles… oh, and who has the best dance moves?
It’s just me, but I am equally the best and worst dancer in the group
Tell us about your new project: Who did you work with? Where was it recorded? What’s it about? Is there candy?
I recorded this EP with Pat Mencel, who produced and cowrote with me as well as ROZES, the biggest baddest writer in the biz. She always has coffee… never candy. I’m trying to forgive her for that. It’s an EP about finding yourself through the pain and triumphs of relationships.
How do you describe your music to new friends?
I say that it’s my own personal twist on kind of a Lana Del Rey vibe, Amy Winehouse voiced record… if they took a vacation to the bahamas.
Other than Carrie Lane, what should your hometown be known for?
Well everyone is talking about Montclair, New Jersey right now because Justin Bieber just moved there. Let it be known I was there 23 years before you Bieber… 23 years.
Please look around you right now and please describe the first item or person you see that’s significant to you (and that your relationship with it/them). Can we see a photo?
Right now I’m looking at the toaster and the fact that it is unplugged (which is completely ridiculous to me). My boyfriend Mike is literally obsessed with unplugging things after they are used, the toaster, the hairdryer… everything. It’s because he is very concerned with keeping me safe and that’s one of my very favorite things about him because without him I most likely would have burnt our apartment down 30 times over by now, or left my head at home.
What first inspired you to pursue music? If it was a musician or a specific piece of music, please tell us all about why you find it so inspirational…
I was first inspired by music because of broadway. I grew up going to broadway shows with my mom and I thought, Wow, I can’t imagine myself doing anything except being on stage for the rest of my life.
What’s the best advice anyone has given you about pursuing a life in music?
Make a plan.
Not including your current crew, who (alive or dead) would you love to have in your van for an all day drive from gig to gig?
Jimmy Iovine, he would be making some crazy insane plan and taking over the world in the matter of a day and I’d be like, Cool Jimmy good for you.
What song best sums up your life right now?
“Loco in Acapulco” by Four Tops
What is the best reaction to your music you have experienced so far?
Someone from my childhood reached out and wrote a beautiful letter to me about how my music got her through a very rough time in her life. It meant more to me than she probably even realizes.
Take a moment to dream – Where do hope to be a year from now?
On a major label opening for a huge act on a national tour.
What’s your next step towards that dream?
Believe in it.
