Alice Merton Finds “No Roots”

German-British singer discusses the songs that influenced her sound

Back in February, German-British singer Alice Merton released her debut EP, No Roots. The album’s title track shot to the top of the charts across a variety of countries, reaching the top five in Germany, France, Luxembourg, Austria, and Slovenia, and now has broken into the Billboard Alt Radio Top 40, while amassing over 60 million plays on Spotify and YouTube.

Merton was raised in Canada, Germany, and England, which is probably why her debut single rings so authentically, as she describes having had many different residences but comes to the realization that her home was never in one place.  At only 24, the singer has managed to find a classic pop sound that remains true to her modern upbringing.

ARTISTdirect caught up with Alice Merton to discuss the songs that influenced her, the artists she looks up to, and the track she’d want played at her own funeral.

First single I bought…

When You Were Young – The Killers

First live show I attended…

I grew up with operas and classical concerts, those were the first shows I was introduced to.

First song I learned to play…

To be honest I can’t remember.

The song that encouraged me to learn my instrument of choice…

There was never a song that encouraged me. It was more the fact that I wanted to put down in words and music what was on my mind.

The song that reminds me of home…

Us – Regina Spektor

My guilty secret track…

I don’t really have any tracks I’m guilty of listening to.

The song I wish I wrote…

Your Song – Elton John

The finest song from my all time hero…

Eet – Regina Spektor

The song I’ve written of which I’m most proud…

I’m proud of them all.

The song that should be played at my funeral…

Forever Young

My favorite track from my most recent project…

I don’t believe in favourite songs.
