ARTISTdirect artist directFrom Lips that are Flaming to Flays that are K, this is a holiday sampling of a few of our favorite chats this year…

2017 has been a very fun year for Team ARTISTdirect when it came to talking to interesting people about interesting things, aka the actual interviews of ARTISTdirect interviews. By way of thanks, we would like to round out our year with a brief sampling of ten of our favorite moments with just a few of the musician we love. We hope you use them as jumping off points into deeper dives with artists well worth the leap of faith.

Deap Vally

“Obviously sax can go two ways. It can go kind of a cheesy Kenny G way or it can be done really cool and tasteful. You can get some cool darkness out of it, some dissonant notes, if it’s done right…”

K.Flay

“I think you’re able to talk about emotional things which other people aren’t comfortable talking about, I think you can talk about political things that other people don’t feel talking about, and for me this president is the host of a TV show, so I don’t really think anyone can be too mad about a musician talking about him, or talking about what’s going on, or just the huge nature of what’s transpiring in this country…”

Kaskade

“I was lucky to grow up just outside of Chicago, so I could hop the train into the city and see what flavor this amazing city was offering up for the night. I have a ticket stub from 1986 at the Aragon Ballroom to see New Order. I just came across the ticket a few days ago, which was pretty sweet because I’m playing that exact same room in June. It kind of plays games with my mind…”

Bully

“I know that in certain situations I’ve been told, like if we got some sort of success somewhere, or if we got a writeup somewhere, I’ve been told by numerous guys, in like three different situations that I can specifically recall, where they were like, “You got it ‘cause so and so wants to f*** you.” And I think that plants a seed in your head like you’re not deserving of it, and it makes it hard for you to appreciate the work you do, and think that it’s valid…”

The National

“Sometimes maybe somebody else’s blurry ideas help me get into a song, whether melodically or just where should I even start. Occasionally I’ll just listen to random stuff from my music collection, my own favorites on random or something like that, and if it pops up I’ll have it in my head and just turn on a new sketch, and it will just be random connection…

Flaming Lips

“You’re still you and music gets in there and all the little points it touches is about you and I think when music is being truthful and being sad and being optimistic it touches on all these different parts of your mind and that’s what people are so drawn to. It’s about you. It’s not about the person singing, the singing becomes you singing…”

The Roots

“Seeing my peers like Common and Robert Glasper and John Legend win Golden Globes and Emmys and Oscars, it’s just been a really humbling reminder of the potential of what it is that we do. It’s definitely been grounding for me in that the sky is the limit as an MC and as a wordsmith and as a musician. This just kind of reinforces a drive within me to achieve, and to be great…”

Mastodon

“I’ve put so much hard work and heart and soul into this record, we all did, that it… it was a tough year, last year. It was f***ing brutal on everybody, and it’s always brutal – that’s just life, but I feel like we channeled that brutality into an awesome piece of art, and I think people are noticing that. I feel great about it…”

Elbow

“We still consider ourselves very lucky to do this for a living. I know a lot of young bands these days – they’ll get deals and things, but they’ll still have to work in bars and things, so… for me, to be able to continue doing what we do… that’s enough for me. Everything else is bonus…”

Damian Marley

“I really just do it because I need to do it, and I love music. So it’s not really something that’s super-calculated or something that you can write down as a feeling…”
