A$AP Rocky’s favorite singer songwriter waxes lyrical on a Kinks-like sunny afternoon
One day there was a busker called Joe Fox. Joe Fox was singing in the street when he caught the attention of a rapper. That rapper was A$AP Rocky, and he was impressed by the young busker that he heard – so much so that he invited the street singer into the studio to record. Joe Fox appears all over At. Long. Last. A$AP, the second full length studio album from the A$AP, and it’s from there, and that chance encounter that his notoriety began to rise.
Now, becoming known as a vocal talent with penmanship to match Joe Fox has just released two singles his laid-back reflective track “Aftershow”, and the stunning “Sweet Song”, with a view on a full length album of his own, and an ambition to take his songs from the street and the studio to the stage.
ARTISTdirect caught up with A$AP Rocky’s favorite singer-songwriter as he was out in the street hailing a cab. We talked of aspirations, inspirations and where we’ll all be a year from now.
Hello – Please introduce yourself.
I am Joe Fox, I am an earthling who plays music and I am a big fan of the sunshine, good food and art.
Where are you right now?
I am in London town trying to unsuccessfully hail a cab and reply to these questions
Tell us about your new project. Who did you record it with:
Leon Michaels from Truth and Soul.
Where was it recorded:
Diamond Mine Studios in New York, Rak Studios in London
What’s it about?
It’s a collection of songs that I wanted to get down on record
How do you describe your music to new friends?
Soul music. It took a while for me to realise that it’s just soul music.
Other than Joe Fox, what should your hometown be known for?
London should be known for being a great mixture of cultures and people, somewhere where all those different influences mix to create something new.
What first inspired you to pursue music? If it was a musician or a specific piece of music, please tell us all about why you find it so inspirational…
I first picked up a guitar after a break up when I was younger and needed to get all that emotion out.
What’s the best advice anyone has given you about pursuing a life in music?
The collective advice of everyone I’ve met, there is not one bit that stands out its what you learn along the way.
Not including your current crew, who (alive or dead) would you love to have in your van for an all day drive from gig to gig?
I would love to have been in Janis Joplin’s van. I love outspoken women so being in the van for a day would have been great.
What song best sums up your life right now?
At the moment, the Kinks “Sunny Afternoon” as that what it is right now in London.
What is the best reaction to your music you have experienced so far?
A couple of people have got tattoos of my lyrics. That lasts longer than just a tweet!
Take a moment to dream – Where do hope to be a year from now?
I’d like to be still happy, everything else is just a bonus.
What’s your next step towards that dream?
Finishing this album and finally managing to get this cab!
