Electronic DJ trio discuss the music that influenced their youths, the songs they’re most proud of, and the tracks that remind them of home
Made up of Trevor Dahl, Kevin Ford, and Matthew Russell, electronic DJ trio Cheat Codes first burst onto the scene back in 2016 with their instant hit, “Sex”. This year they pushed the needle even higher with the release of “No Promises” featuring Demi Lovato, which has been streamed over 400 million times and has officially gone platinum in the United States.
Now the band has released a new single, “Feels Great” featuring Fetty Wap. An instant feel-good earworm, the song is the band’s “version of a John Hughes movie” and all those cheerful vibes are present from start to finish in another surefire hit from the Los Angeles-based trio.
ARTISTdirect caught up with Cheat Codes to discuss the music that influenced their youths, the songs they’re most proud of, and the tracks that remind them of home.
First single I bought…
The first CD that was given to me as Backstreet Boys Millennium for my 9th birthday haha
Bob Dylan, he has some of my favorite lyrics to this day!
Weird Al Yankovich, I loved his song White and Nerdy…
First live show I attended…
The first show I saw was From First to Last opening for Motion City Soundtrack. I waited outside the venue after the show and actually met Sonny Moore before he was Skrillex. I think I was 13 at the time.
Plus 44, which is the side project of Blink 182’s Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker. Its crazy cause I just recently did a session with Mark, crazy how you can evolve from a fan to a colleague.
The first show I saw was my uncle Stan performing with his band Sugar Ray. They were a big reason I got into music. Love you uncle Stan!
First song I learned to play…
Smoke on the water on guitar! I remember it was the easiest rock riff you could play so I had my guitar teacher show me.
Adam’s song by Blink 182 on guitar. I was obviously a huge blink fan haha
Basket Case by Green Day, used to love the punk music.
The song that encouraged me to learn my instrument of choice…
Dance Dance by Fall Out Boy, Pete plays that super funky bass riff to open the song.
Fly by sugar ray haha
My dad wrote this song when I was younger called, “haunted house in the ally way.” I wanted to learn guitar after that so I could perform with my dad.
The song that reminds me of home…
Ironic by Alanis Morissette, this song always come on the radio station back my mom used to play….
My guilty secret track…
Roar by Katy Perry… makes me feel powerful, girl power!
The song I wish I wrote…
New slang by the shins, Its one of my favorite songs 😉
The finest song from my all time hero…
Let it be by the Beatles
The song I’ve written of which I’m most proud…
SEX, it was a really cool moment for us to bring something classic like “Lets Talk About Sex” Salt N Peppa, and add in modern lyrics and production.
The song that should be played at my funeral…
I will follow you into the dark by Death Cab For Cutie. Listen to it, you’ll cry haha
My favorite track from my most recent project
We haven’t put out an album or an E.P. yet but our latest single is called “Feels Great” featuring Fetty Wap and its out now, check it! We’re stoked about this one!
