Cody Crump hails from a small town in Colorado, but now calls Los Angeles home. His new EP, "Hola", shows just how far he has come, both in distance and in sound. The multilingual record digs into the journey of a relationship. It's bittersweet, vulnerable, and most importantly honest.
With help from Los Angeles-based actress Alexandra LeMosle, who provides vocals in French, Crump is able to take his electronic sound and bridge the gaps between languages and cultures. It's a dark and synth-heavy record that takes a relationship from beginning to end, and exposes all of its parts.
ARTISTdirect caught up with Cody to discuss the new EP, how his magic 8-ball helps him through difficult decisions, and find out just what's next for this artist on the verge.
hi - my name is cody crump - i am a musician, artist, and a really cool human.
Where are you right now?
I am at my castle in Los Angeles, CA - working on a whole buttload of new music.
Tell us about your new project: Who did you work with? Where was it recorded? What’s it about? Is there candy?
My new EP is called 'Hola'. I recorded it mostly at my castle in L.A. I had my friend Alexandra Lemosle lay down some sexy vocals in french, and some in Spanish. I also had my other friend Jason Ganberg lay down some sexy drums. It's about many things: love, loss, emotions, making babies, feeling weird.
How do you describe your music to new friends?
Depends on the project. I tend to change things up by whatever inspires me at the time. But one thing that stays consistent would be the unmistakable - unique sound of my sweet sweet soul.
Why are you a solo artist?
I wanted to be a solo artist because i knew i couldn't break up with myself - and that only I would be able to create the music i wanted to create.
Other than Cody Crump, what should your hometown be known for?
Well - if we are talking about L.A. - that would be Hollywood. What else should it be known for? I would say the large collection of different cultures and groups of people from all over the world - working and dreaming every single day.
Please look around you right now and please describe the first item or person you see that’s significant to you.
My magic 8-ball. I am a bit superstitious - and sometimes defer life's tougher questions to my magic 8-ball.
What first inspired you to pursue music? If it was a musician or a specific piece of music, please tell us all about why you find it so inspirational...
When I realized I would not be a professional athlete - I stumbled upon my love for music - and began a passionate affair that I am sure will last a lifetime.
What’s the best advice anyone has given you about pursuing a life in music?
Say thank you. be grateful. work.
Not including your current crew, who (alive or dead) would you love to have in your van for an all day drive from gig to gig?
Halle Berry? Natalie Portman? Chris Farley?
What song best sums up your life right now?
What is the best reaction to your music you have experienced so far?
A few kids have contacted me about using some of my songs in student films after hearing them on tv shows. That's pretty cool to me.
Take a moment to dream - Where do hope to be a year from now?
Performing at a GRAMMY's after party - drinking lots of margaritas - doing whatever I feel like doing whenever I feel like doing it.
What’s your next step towards that dream?
Work. Play more shows. Make my own luck.
